Water has a pivotal role in continuation of human civilization. It is a source of life and prosperity and at the same time a cause of death and devastation. Because of this close association of water with human existence and growth, water resources management has been viewed as a crucial vehicle for socio-economic development. Due to its topography, river networks, sub-tropical littoral location, the State of Odisha is prone to heavy floods, tropical cyclone forced rainfall and storm surges. At the same time due to effects of climate change, the State witnesses unpredicted monsoon with erratic rainfall, cloud bursts and long dry spells. These events make all water related sustainable and developmental activities of the state vulnerable. Conservation of water; catching the rain where it falls and when it falls has become a necessity of the day. The objective is achieved in a planned manner when the State maintains a database of all its water bodies. The portal, Ama Jalasaya is such an endeavor to capture all the water bodies of the State in a geo-spatial platform for everyone who is concerned about water.
